Adamo Muskingum River Power Plant

Work continued for the Adamo Group at the site of the former Muskingum River Power Plant near Beverly, Ohio. At 6:30am on Friday May 18th, 2018, the Adamo Group brought down the hyperbolic cooling tower and adjacent stack with a series of controlled implosions. The cooling tower and stack began operation in 1968 and were part of Unit 5 of the former coal fed power plant.

At its peak, the plant ran 6500 tons of coal through the plant a day. The stack stood at 825 feet (nearly 70 stories tall) while the hyperbolic cooling tower was 370 feet tall and 395 feet diameter at the base. The cooling tower had once held 2.9 million gallons of water.

Adamo Group used a series of charged explosives to bring down the two structures safely, landing precisely where they had predicted.

Adamo Group’s controlled implosion of the Pontiac Silverdome upper ring went off safely on Monday December 4th. In just a few seconds the upper steel and concrete ring surrounding the structure was on the ground.

The implosion kicked off demolition work at the site and crews can now begin cleanup efforts. The project expected to last approximately 12 months.

Georgia Dome Imploded in a Matter of Seconds

Georgia Dome Imploded in a Matter of Seconds

On November 20, 2017 the Adamo Group used 5000 pounds of explosives to bring down the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Richard Adamo, president of the Adamo Group, had the honor of pressing the button to begin the implosion at 7:30am that frigid Monday morning. People from all over the city watched from various vantage points as the dome came down in a short 12 seconds without incident. The preparations, which began for the project over a year earlier, culminated on Monday morning in the successful felling of the structure without damage to the nearby buildings.

One of the biggest challenges for the Adamo team was how to implode the dome without damaging the brand new Mercedes Benz Stadium only 83 feet away. A large temporary barrier set up between the two buildings during the implosion aided in protecting the new stadium. Additionally, Adamo attacked the upper concrete ring, which was nearly 26 feet across and 8 feet deep to insure the building fell as intended. The nearly half mile long concrete ring had buttressed the world’s largest cable-supported fabric roof on the nearly 29 story structure.

Adamo Group will continue work at the site, processing the materials produced from the implosion. 97% of all materials from the building will be recycled and reused.

Adamo Group’s Ohio Implosion Goes Off Perfectly

Adamo Group's Ohio Implosion Goes Off Perfectly

Commissioned in 1953, the Muskingum River Power Plant Units 1-4 were among the oldest active in the United States. The Adamo Group has been meticulously dismantling the plant since mid-2015 with an emphasis on maximizing the recycling of as many materials as possible. The planning and execution of the implosion of the Unit 1-4 boiler buildings had to be precise so as not to damage the live switch yard, less than 160 feet away

On November 12, 2017, Adamo Group safely brought down the buildings in seconds after years of planning their removal. The implosion went perfectly and Adamo Group’s effort to prevent damage to the live switch yard was successful.

Adamo Group implodes former AEP Muskingum Unit 5 Boiler

On August 6th 2016, Adamo Group completed an implosion at the 12 story unit 5 boiler building at the Muskingum River Power Plant near Beverly Ohio.

At the former AEP owned plant, Unit 5 was capable of generating 615.2 Megawatts of electricity during peak operation. One megawatt is capable of serving approximately 1,000 houses so this particular unit represented roughly power to over 600,000 customers. The plant was shuttered in 2015 as part of AEP’s plan to reduce carbon emissions and one of 11 coal plants AEP closed.

The felling of the boiler building in Unit 5 went as planned at exactly 8 AM on Saturday morning and without incident. Despite exhaustive abatement and remediation, a small flare from coal dust was expected to burn off within a few seconds and did. Adamo Group was assisted by Pettigrew, Inc. who placed and executed the charges.

Adamo Implodes Park Avenue Hotel

Adamo Implodes Historic Park Avenue Hotel

History is the chronicle of life-changing events. The strategic implosion of the long-abandoned Park Avenue Hotel on July 11, 2015 was a significant step in the ongoing growth and renewal of the City of Detroit. Just as the erection of this hotel tells part of Detroit’s storied history, its demolition will do the same.

The 13-story hotel, built in 1924, featured luxurious and innovative decor and was a great success until 1928, when it was taken over by the Salvation Army. The property continued to experience ups and downs over the next 87 years serving as a senior housing facility and eventually the Salvation Army’s Harbor Lights Center, a rehabilitation center for the homeless until it was eventually shuttered for good in 2003.

Using precision demolition techniques, Adamo Group together with Dykon Explosive Specialists strategically placed and discharged 200 pounds of linear shape charges to implode the former Park Avenue Hotel in approximately 17 seconds. Weeks of preparation work were required to accomplish this massive task while simultaneously preserving the nearby historic Eddystone Hotel located a mere 28 feet away.

Adamo President Richard Adamo, remained on-site monitoring all project tasks throughout the process and shared these thoughts:

“The safety and success of this implosion is a result of careful planning, communication from the entire Adamo project management and field teams, and the assistance of all local governmental agencies/officials. Barton Mallow Hunt White, along with the coordination through the Detroit Entertainment Events Center ownership also aided in the effective execution of this project”

When asked about the result of the implosion at the Park Avenue Hotel, John Adamo Jr., CEO of Adamo Group Inc. stated the following:

“I am extremely proud of our entire team. They performed above and beyond to prepare and safely implement our work plan with the highest level of precision. The success of this implosion was no doubt the result of the tireless efforts engaged by the professionals working for us.”

Adamo Receives NDA Environmental Excellence Award

Adamo has been a major part of the largest demolition effort funded by TARP Hardest Hit Funds. It was one of three contractors tasked with abating and demolishing up to 800 homes each in a short 90 day window in late summer of 2014. Adamo’s project was a success; in fact we completed our first nearly 600 locations assigned, completing the work faster than the agency was able to get them cleared for demolition. We increased our fleet and staff by over 15% and completed the work while simultaneously continuing our residential and commercial demolition projects with other City departments, completing over 1,100 structures in 9 months.

“What they did recently was remarkable, taking down 1300 homes with no environmental problems, no OSHA complaints. It’s an extraordinary company, doing extraordinary work. We’re really proud to be partnered with them,” stated City of Detroit Mayor, Mike Duggan.

Adamo increased their capacity several-fold to ensure public and environmental health and safety. This led to a flawless safety record, with no incidents or accidents for the duration of the project. And the work performed by Adamo Group was referred to by individuals in Washington D.C. as what should be ‘the national best practice.’
