Adamo Proud to Support Detroit Public Safety Foundation

Adamo Group was in attendance at the 2014 Above & Beyond Awards Ceremony at Cobo Center last week. Hosted by the Detroit Public Safety Foundation, the ceremony is an opportunity to recognize and thank DPD and DFD First Responders who have gone above and beyond the normal demands of service. Award recipients received the Medal of Valor or Purple Heart. Adamo is honored to have been among those in attendance and is proud to support the foundation and the men and women who so bravely serve our community.

City of Farmington Hills DPW Site Storm Sewer

Adamo Group has been busy installing a new site storm sewer at the City of Farmington Hills Department of Public Works (DPW) since mid-September. Crews are also removing and replacing driveway and parking areas to complete improvement efforts that were disrupted over the past year due to the installation of a new Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner (WRC) water supply tower at the rear of the DPW site. Adamo is overseeing the work performed by its subcontractors to install a card-operated security entrance and exit gate, and a 40’ X 60’ enclosed storage structure. Storm sewer work is being performed with a variety of Adamo’s Caterpillar equipment, including its 330 crawler excavator, 966 loader, 416 backhoe, and 533 vibratory roller. Traffic was re-routed throughout the initial phase of the project while a portion of Halstead Road was re-paved and two new approaches installed. Crew size was increased during this phase to return traffic patterns to normal as soon as possible. Adamo is teaming with the City of Farmington Hills DPW, design engineers at OHM Associates, and the civil engineering department at the Oakland County WRC to ensure this project stays on track to meet its scheduled completion date of mid-2015.

Safety Training That Goes Above and Beyond

Going above and beyond required OSHA standards, we educate and train our employees on every level of exposure – not just regulated hazardous materials. A few weeks ago, Ron Swan of TSP Environmental was on site at Adamo’s headquarters where he provided 8-hour and 40-hour HAZWOPER training to the 25 employees working on the GM SPO Facility in Swartz Creek. Ron has more than 30 years of experience in the industry and holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan. Due to the crew’s work on equipment that may contain unregulated PCBs, we refreshed their training for those environmental working conditions. All participants successfully completed the course and received certification.

Adamo Cleaning Up in Detroit

Adamo Group began demolishing blighted and abandoned homes in July as part of the City’s six-year long blight blitz. Just four months later, Adamo has removed nearly 800 blighted structures – leading the pack at 38%. Adamo is utilizing 325 excavators to level the structures and load the debris into trucks, and bulldozers for backfilling and grading. Six to eight crews, consisting of two to three workers per crew, are operating six days per week, 10 hours per day to meet the project’s aggressive timeline. Additional Section 3 qualified employees and Detroit residents were hired to perform the extra work. The project has met with a few challenges along the way, including torrential downpours, squatters, and obtaining utility disconnections. The Detroit Police Department has been a great help in assisting with squatters, and the Detroit Land Bank Authority has been working closely with DTE to obtain utility shut-off clearance in batches. This in turn has enabled Adamo to obtain demolition permits in batches, keeping the project on schedule. The logistics of trucking high volumes of debris to landfills, including a shortage of trucks and the shutdown of I-96, posed additional challenges. New routes to landfills had to be taken, consuming valuable time. Due to Adamo’s long-standing relationships with the landfill companies, facilities stayed open later to accommodate the project’s objectives. Interaction from the community throughout the project has been very positive overall. During the due diligence stage it was common for residents to approach crews and thank them for their work and for helping to improve the image of their neighborhoods. One resident wrote a letter to the Mayor, applauding Adamo for its quick emergency work on a structure that was in danger of falling on her home. With phase I of the blight blitz wrapping up, Adamo crews are making final grades and site restorations to parcels where hundreds of blighted homes stood just weeks ago.

OCC Highland Hall Update

This is what the landscape looks like today where Highland Hall, a building on Oakland Community College’s Highland Lake Campus in Waterford, stood just 5 months ago. Adamo Group began demolishing the 100,000 sq. ft., 3-story building in May to make way for a new park. More than 12,000 tons of brick, concrete, and metal were recycled from the structure.
