Adamo Group Inc. is performing the demolition of the Detroit Manufacturing Complex for American Axle & Manufacturing in Detroit, Mich.
American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc. (AAM), a Tier-One Automotive Supplier, was formed on March 1, 1994, when it purchased 5 of 18 General Motors manufacturing properties on the market at the time, including Michigan’s Detroit Gear & Axle, Detroit Forge and Three Rivers Propshaft Plants, New York’s Buffalo Gear & Axle and Tonawanda Forge Plants.
What is known today as the AAM Detroit Manufacturing Complex started with the construction of Detroit Gear & Axle by General Motors in 1917. The plant was constructed for the manufacture of airplane parts for use in World War I.
Detroit Forge was acquired by General Motors in 1918. Detroit Forge and Detroit Gear & Axle eventually both became part of the Chevrolet Gear & Axle Division of GM in 1922. These two plants are at the site of today’s Detroit Manufacturing Complex.
In 1943, Detroit Plant 6 was involved in manufacturing parts to be used in World War II, adding to the rich history of the site.
The Detroit Manufacturing Complex site is located just east of Interstate 75 on both the north and south sides of Holbrook. Adamo is demolishing Plants 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, the parking deck and powerhouse. The 1.9 million sq ft of building demolition follows the removal of universal wastes, asbestos-containing materials, salvageable equipment and recyclable non-ferrous and ferrous materials. All buildings will be demolished to grade and turned over to the owner for final disposition.
The project is actually situated over the boundary of the cities of Detroit and Hamtramck and is further divided by Holbrook Avenue, in essence almost creating two distinct jobsites for one project. There were logistical complexities to overcome where single plants occupied property in both Detroit and Hamtramck, complicating the permitting process. There are also plants and other facilities on the site remaining active throughout and following the demolition. Utility re-routes were successfully completed prior to retiring services to the plants to be demolished.
The project will be completed in early summer 2014 and Adamo anticipates recycling over 20,000 tons of ferrous material, 1 million lb of non-ferrous materials and 12,000 tons of concrete.
